AIM: TO LOOK AT THE WATER CYCLE AND HOW CLIMATE CHANGE IS AFFECTING IT.
Definition: the water cycle speeds up and it rains more which then causes floods.
Acidification
Deforestation
Water vapour
ice melt
Definition
Acidification is the construction of acidic, this affects climate change as it starts killing marine life and makes the sea hotter and hotter. Green house gases are released into the air 25% of this goes into the ocean each year that turns into acidification.
Deforestation is the act of cutting down trees, this releases more green house gases into the air which destroys the atmosphere. These green house gases do a lot of damage and after that the wood is sometimes burned which creates more green house gases.
Water vapour the evaporation of water it affects the climate as by increasing humidity in the air which makes the atmosphere warmer. The water vapour rises into the air creating rain which makes floods.
ice melt, heat causing ice to melt into water, this affects climate change as it causes a lot more rain which causes floods. It also makes the sea level rise which would cover lands in water causing tragedy and land loss.
Scientific words:
- Evaporation. When water is heated by radiant energy it turns into water vapor.
- Transpiration. Evaporation from plants.
- Condensation. When water vapor cools, molecules join together and form clouds.
- Precipitation. When clouds get heavy the waters falls as rain, sleet, hail, or snow.
- Acidification: the action or process of making or becoming acidic.
We will be conducting an experiment that looks at the different ways that climate change is affecting the water cycle.
THE WATER CYCLE EXPERIMENT
Bag 1: Normal Water cycle
Bag 2: Water cycle with CO2 added: like Oceans in climate change
Bag 3: Water cycle with ice added: like Antarctica in climate change
Material:
- Water/soda water
- PH papaer/ Litmus paper
- Food colouring
- Bag
- Permanent marker
- Sand
Steps:
- We wrote the cycle on the bag
- put 1 cup of water or soda water in a bag with 2 drops of food colouring
- hung the water cycles up
- We left the water cycles for 2 weeks
- wrote about our findings
Findings:
|
The Water Cycle: Bag 1
|
CO2 Water Cycle: Bag 2
Acid
|
Desert Water Cycle
Bag 3
|
Does it cycle?
| Yes | Yes | Yes |
Amount of Water
| 2 | 2 | 2 |
Acidity
| 1 | 3 | 1 |
Key: Water and acidity amount: 1 = none
2 = small drips
3 = large drips
Other comments:
Bag 1: cycled water
Bag 2: add a small amount of water
Bag 3: the acidity in bag 3 is low
1-3 bags had low water levels
All 3 bags allowed the water cycle to work
Bag 1 had no acidity
Bag 2 had high acidity
Bag 3 had no acidity
Conclusion:
Bag 1 had little amount of water, the water cycle worked and had no acidity.
Bag 2 also had a small amount of water, the water cycle worked in that to and had a lot
acidity.
Bag 3 had some water in it, the water cycle worked in it and had no acidity.
Draw a labelled diagram of the Water Cycle

TODAY YOU WILL BE INVESTIGATING THE EFFECTS THAT CLIMATE CHANGE HAS ON THE WATER CYCLE.
- Using your SOLO hexagons poster write a paragraph about the different aspects of climate change.
- Write about the following Climate Change concepts:
You can do these by powerpoint, embedding a movie , on your blog, on a doc or any other form of presentation. It is up to you.
