The bone fuels-Fossil fuels

Fossil fuels are a highly used source. They are burned which releases carbon dioxide into the atmosphere which is lethal to our ecosystem.
Some fossil fuels are:
Coal, oil and a lot more.
Mining and burning these fuels could kill our environment and destroy our ecosystem. It can leave massive large holes and cause animals to have no home to live in. Climate change is being caused by fossil fuels.

Hurumanu - Fossil Fuels.

Aim: To look at how fossil fuels are contributing to climate change and how we can prevent this.

Definition of Fossil Fuels:
A fossil fuels is  an object that is obtained different ways. The fossil fuels are burned releasing carbon dioxide into the air which destroys it.

Scientific Terms for Students
  • coal: a dark-brown to black solid substance formed naturally from the compaction and hardening of fossilised plants and used as a fuel primarily for electricity generation
  • natural gas: a mixture of hydrocarbon gases that occurs naturally beneath the earth’s surface and is used as a fuel primarily for cooking and heating homes
  • renewable resource: a resource that is never used up (e.g., solar energy)
  • non-renewable resource: a resource that is not replaceable after its use (e.g., coal, gas)

Examples of Fossil Fuels:
  1.   Oil
  2.   Coal
  3.   Natural gas

Activity:

In groups of 3 you will learn about different fossil fuels and the way they are mined?
Each group will be given a fossil fuel. The recorder will read it to the group. The recorder will write down some of the important points.
Person 1: Recorder: to write down 5 points of interest from the text.
  1. 5 Points:
  2. Positives and negatives of your type of mining.
Person 2: Reporter: to read back to the class their 5 points of interest.
Person 3: Collector: Gathers the required stationary from the teacher.

Mining Fossil Fuels

What Fossil Fuels are mined?
How are they mined?

1. coal is mined using big machines which destroys the dirt and mines the coal. It can also be mined using pickaxes
2. Oil is mined using big machines normally put on water these are called oil rig.
3. Natural gas is mined like oil by getting a large piece of machinery to extract the gas
4. petroleum is a liquid

Where are they mined?

1. Coal is mined from above ground although coal itself is below ground
2. Underwater on the sea bed
3. Like coal it is mined from above ground although the gas is below ground
4. Petroleum slowly rises above ground when able to escape but is caught underground.

    Activity;

On the sheet provided you need to make two drawings of your cookie.
    1. looking down at it.
    2. side on -  of the imaginary habitat that will live on the top of the cookie. ( trees, buses, flax, sea, etc)

    Material:

    1.    Pencils
    2.   Toothpick
    3.   Cookie
    4.  plate
    5. Paper
    Steps:
    1. Draw a cookie on a piece of paper as it was before the coal (Chocolate chips) were mined
    2.  then try to extract the coal (Chocolate chips) without breaking the cookie
    3.  draw the cookie again after the coal (Chocolate chips) was mined.
    4.  Think of how bad this is and how you could stop it.
Once you have drawn your cookies you must take 2 pictures and upload them to your blog.

Findings: What did you find out as a result of your mining? That it was hard to do but it really shows what happens to animals habitats

Conclusion: We need to stop mining in the areas animals live in as it is very dangerous to the animals and destroys a lot of useful land.

    1. Hi Nathan I love the fact that you explained what the fossil fuels are like How coal is a black solid. but the one thing i would change is that add more fossil fuels examples.
