Creative writing. The Narrative: English

 Show Don't tell

What does this mean?

It's like seeing is believing. You must show someone for them to believe rather than just telling.

Rewrite these sentences to show not tell

The buildings are tall.

The constructions tower over me

Sarah was really upset

You could see the misery pour from her eyes

She was so happy to see him

Her face lightened in his presence

The lake was beautiful

The lake sparkled from the gaze of the sun

The guests praised me when I entered with food

I could saw the bright burning inferno as it turned everything to a crisp

I saw a large man walk past me with his large black bushy beard and combed short hair.

The firepit quickly turned the cold dark colored room a warm bright welcoming yellow.

Sensory Settings:

The grey-colored concrete walls provided no heat. My fingers froze to the point they were so numb I felt nothing.  I tasted blood although It couldn't be actual blood. The sounds were so incredibly loud my ears rung for days.

It was ginormous. It stood 4500 feet tall and cost somewhere around 7 billion dollars. It was labeled the 2024 tower of man. It had 4 food courts, every single food was chosen by civilians and I can say the food taste amazing.

The stone-built hut stood alone in the hilly grass field. The grass grew tall and was very bright green. You could smell fresh flowers, you could hear birds chirping.

Setting backdrop:

The sun-scorched any living creature in sight. The sand was blown by the raging wind. Tumbleweeds moved so quickly they could kill. A sandstorm formed removing all the sand from the area along with any insects that survived the sun. Their legs still moving as they seemed terrified.

Reflection

I learned there is a lot of different information needed to create a character. I can write characters for stories easier now. I enjoyed thinking about the details for my character and trying to base it on a certain person or just thinking randomly. I enjoy writing whatever I want, just being able to write a story without any restrictions.
